The setting: It's my second to last day teaching, and I have just concluded my last observation. After each lesson I am observed teaching, I must meet with my supervisor for a conference. I leave immediately after the lesson to meet with her, notifying my cooperating teacher that I'd be back in 30 minutes to teach writing.
I meet with my supervisor, constantly checking the clock because I know I have to be back. We often get sidetracked and talk about good books, urban teaching, poverty, or something big like that. She kept me talking the whole time until I said "Okay I really have to go now"
I returned to my classroom, and as I approached I saw what looked like balloons? On a window? Hey... what's going on.... I opened the door and hear a big "SURPRISE!!!!" All 33 students + teacher with hands in air, holding balloons and cards. I am--of course-- overwhelmed and laughing so hard.
Here's what my desk looked like:
They had cards and presents and donut holes and all kinds of goodies!
And then I was told to take a seat for the performance...
Three students went to the front of the room, one as a beat box and two as rappers. The following is an excerpt from the song they rapped for me and the class:
Ms. Foster's Rap
Chorus:
Ms. Foster's leaving our school and she's not gonna come back
So help us protest against this because we don't want her to pack
Nevertheless we wish her luck for all she's done to teach us
Now all the other kids are dumber, no others could beat us
Verse:
She loves peanut butter it's her favorite food she thinks it's the best
We can't blame her it's pretty good, better than all the rest
She also loves green it's her favorite color so let's say some too
That green goes into perfectly that's what we'll do
Like grass, leaves, and jello, naturalistic colors as well
Or money, emeralds, and stock rising colors because riches are really swell
Here's the sweet group. If it looks like a lot of ten year olds, it's because it's a LOT of ten year olds.
Parts 2 and 3 of the end are coming soon! PROMISE!!
